AFF CUP 2010 INDONESIA VS PHILIPPINSE Football Frenzy Grips Jakarta

AFF 2010 FOOTBALL FANS AFF Cup 2010 Indonesia Vs Philippines Football Frenzy Grips Jakarta. Jakarta. With the popularity of the national football team skyrocketing in recent weeks, tickets for its two semifinal matches against the Philippines have been selling like hot cakes.

A mad rush for football match tickets is not unusual at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Senayan, South Jakarta. But on Tuesday, instead of the usual scrambling, buyers patiently queued for hundreds of meters from early in the morning to be able to see the national team play in the semifinal matches to be held on Thursday and Sunday.

To prevent the mad rush, organizers opened ticket sales on Monday and implemented a new ticketing system where only receipts are provided.

The actual tickets could only be redeemed six hours before the match.

The tickets are also barcoded.

VVIP and VIP tickets for Thursday's match sold out almost instantly on Monday despite their higher-than-usual prices.

Organizers said they needed funds to help pay for having to host both legs of the semifinal series of the Asean Football Federation’s Suzuki Cup.

The popularity of the national team has soared after it brought an end to years of frustration, scoring three successive convincing wins over its opponents during the group stage.

Adit, 20, who also came with a friend, queued for two and a half hours but could only get tribune seats for Thursday. The pair queued again to get better seats for the Sunday match.

“The counter for Sunday's tickets is supposed to open at 2 p.m., but people were already here since 10 a.m. so they opened it earlier,” Adit said.

For Ari,who came with his two children from Condet, East Jakarta, queuing for Thursday’s match was no longer an option.

“The lines for the Thursday match was crazy. That’s why I’m queueing here. My kids are nagging me all the time,” said Ari, who opted to buy tickets for the Sunday match.

He said he had to seek permission to skip work to be able to buy tickets.

Dani, 27, his face beaming with satisfaction, showed the receipts for 12 tickets and several VIP seats he managed to buy for Sunday.
“My son and his friends who are in elementary school won a football tournament, and this is their prize,” he smiled.

Dani opted to go straight for Sunday’s match as, “It's a holiday and the kids don't have to go to school.”

He said he was told VIP tickets for Sunday were limited as organizers were reserving seats for security reasons.

President Bambang Yudhoyono may arrive and watch the match live.

Wahyu, 30, had to skip work for days to be able to watch the match on Thursday. He came all the way from Lombok.

“But it doesn't matter. Football is about togetherness, even if you have strangers on your left and right,” he said.

Peter, 32, was queueing to buy 20 tickets for his friends at the Bayern Munich fan club.

“We're buying the third-class seats because it’s where the party is. People go wild back there with cheering, jumping and hugging, unlike those sitting at the VIP,” he said.

About 72,000 tickets were printed for each match. Tickets cost Rp 50,000 to Rp 500,000 ($55).Tickets for previous games were sold at Rp 25,000 to Rp 250,000.

In addition to booths at Gelora Bung Karno, tickets can also be purchased from private ticket office Raja Karcis in Manggarai, East Jakarta, and a limited number are sold online at www.ticketsas.com.

FANTASTIC EL CLASICO BARCELONA VS MADRID 5-0 High Fives as Barcelona Humiliate Real and Mourinho

FINAL SCORE EL CLASICO BARCA VS MADRID 2010 - Fantastic El Clasico Barcelona Vs Madrid 5-0 High Fives as Barcelona Humiliate Real and Mourinho. Barcelona. Jose Mourinho had a nightmare first Clasico as champions Barcelona crushed his Real Madrid side 5-0 at Camp Nou on Monday to go two points clear of their bitter rivals at the top of the Spanish first division. Watch Video Barcelona Vs Real Madrid 5-0 El Clasico Live Online.

Spanish World Cup winners Xavi and Pedro Rodriguez put Barcelona into a two-goal lead after just 17 minutes and David Villa marked his first Clasico with a brace inside two minutes (54 min, 56) before Jeffren added a late fifth as Mourinho stomached an unforgettable first defeat in charge of Real.

"It was an important win by a big margin and it puts us top two points above Real in the table which is what we wanted," said Villa. "However, it is only November and there are lots of games left and we have to keep on winning."

For Barcelona it was a fifth successive Clasico win over their arch rivals as coach Pep Guardiola maintained his 100 percent record in the fixture and exacted revenge over Mourinho, whose Inter Milan side defeated Barcelona in last season's Champions League semi-finals.

Real went into the game unbeaten and hoping for a first win at Camp Nou since December 2007.

However, Barcelona gave old boy Mourinho, who used to work for the Catalan club as a translator under Bobby Robson, a night to forget with an emphatic win, one of the heaviest defeats in his glittering career, that evoked memories of the 6-2 drubbing of Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in May 2009.

"One team played to their potential and one didn't," said Mourinho. "It was a defeat that we fully deserved but I don't think you can say it reflected the difference between the two sides.

"The championship isn't over today. We are two points behind the leaders but there are lots of games left to play. We have to show character, train hard and get back to winning. I wish we were playing tomorrow."

It was a huge psychological win for Barca in the title race and the omens are good with the winner of the first Clasico going on to be crowned champions in the last six seasons.

Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain was a last-minute withdrawal for Real due to injury so French international Karim Benzema was handed a chance to shine on the biggest stage.

Guardiola said Real were the best counter-attacking team in the world but said Barcelona would attack and they were good to their word.

In the fifth minute Messi surprised everyone by curling a beautiful left-footed chip onto the post with Iker Casillas well beaten.

It was a warning that Real didn't heed and on nine minutes the hosts took the lead through Xavi.

Andres Iniesta fed a pass into the penalty area with Marcelo failing to intercept the pass and Xavi took advantage of a fortunate piece of control to prod calmly past Casillas to the delight of the home fans.

Real had the best defence in the league beforehand and this was only the seventh goal they had conceded under Mourinho.

The visitors responded with Angel di Maria forcing Victor Valdes to tip over a fierce shot but Barcelona were looking dangerous and struck again on 17 minutes through Pedro.

Villa went past Sergio Ramos by the touchline and Casillas could only fingertip his cross into the path of the inrushing Pedro who fired home.

Cristiano Ronaldo, top-scorer in the league with 14 goals, then took centre stage with his pass almost reaching Benzema only for Eric Abidal to avert the danger.

On the half hour mark Ronaldo started a melee when he pushed Barca coach Guardiola for holding the ball, earning him a yellow card, and then whistled a fine free-kick past the post of Victor Valdes.

Real brought off the ineffective Mesut Ozil at half-time with Lass Diarra replacing him but it was more of the same as Barcelona dominated.

Villa went close with his goal-bound shot blocked but on 54 minutes Messi fed the Spanish World Cup winner, who took the pass brilliantly in his stride before firing past Casillas.

Real complained that Villa was offside but the goal stood and two minutes later the 40-million-euro signing from Valencia struck again with his eighth league goal of the season.

A defence-splitting pass from Messi released Villa, who beat Casillas again and left Real 4-0 down before the hour mark.

Substitute Jeffren Suarez netted a fifth late on and Sergio Ramos was sent off in the final minute for a terrible foul on Messi and then shoving Carles Puyol as tempers boiled over. Agence-France Presse/thejakartaglobe.com

OBAMA IN INDONESIA Cheering, Bakso and Friendship — An Indonesian Welcome Home for Obama

PHOTO OBAMA AND SBY AT JAKARTA INDONESIA - Obama In Indonesia: Cheering, Bakso and Friendship — An Indonesian Welcome Home for Obama. He’s famous for his coolness and dignified bearing, but on a showery Tuesday afternoon, US President Barack Obama touched down in Jakarta for the first time since his childhood to a welcome fit for a rock star. Also read: Merapi Volcanic Ash Jakarta (Indonesia) Update News Airlines Stop Jakarta Flights After Volcano Blast.

His trip was twice postponed and threatened this time by Mount Merapi’s eruptions, but long-time Jakarta residents could not recall another foreign leader arriving to such fanfare.

Throngs of office workers braved city streets in the rain or peered from high-rise office blocks for a glimpse of Obama’s motorcade as it sped down an empty toll road and onto Jalan Sudirman en route to the Presidential Palace.

Magazine editor Ratna Dewi joined the crowd outside her office to catch a fleeting glimpse of Obama in Cadillac One, the US president’s virtually impregnable armor-plated limousine.

“Obama’s different from other leaders,” Ratna said. “He’s charismatic, he appeals to young people — and he’s one good-looking man!”

Countless others gathered around television screens as Air Force One touched down at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport after a flight from India, their screams echoing through hallways and living rooms as the American leader and the first lady, Michelle Obama, descended to the tarmac to be greeted by an honor guard of officials and soldiers.

Although he is beset by political troubles back home, the reception left little doubt that Obama remains a star in the city he called home between 1967 and 1971.

For his part, the former Menteng resident said he barely recognized the city.

“As I was driving down the streets, the only building that was there when I first moved to Jakarta was Sarinah,” he said at a joint press conference with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

“Now it’s one of the shorter buildings on the road.”

“When you visit a place that you spent time in as a child, as a president it’s a little bit disorienting.”

At the glittering state dinner that followed at Istana Negara — a place that, as a child from “Menteng dalam,” he said he never imagined he would one day enter — Obama thanked his hosts for the “bakso, nasi goreng, emping, krupuk.”

“Semuanya enak,” he said, praising the food to a crowd that included former President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who made her first visit to the palace since she left office in 2004 after a falling-out with Yudhoyono.

During the dinner, Yudhoyono conferred the Bintang Jasa Utama, the nation’s highest civilian honor, on Obama’s late mother, Ann Dunham Soetoro, for her work with NGOs in Indonesia.

“In honoring her you honor the spirit that led her to travel to various parts of the country,” Obama said. “I am deeply moved.”

But Obama emphasized that his visit was more than nostalgia.

“I’m here to focus not on the past, but on the future,” he said.

At the palace, Obama and Yudhoyono formally launched the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement, which is designed to enhance investment and trade between the two countries.

“Indonesia is one of the growing markets that we’re going to focus on as part of my initiative to double US exports,” Obama said.

Yudhoyono said the US was Indonesia’s third-largest trading partner, with trade valued at $21 billion in 2008.

But Obama wanted more. “We don’t like No. 3, we want to be No. 1,” he said.

Obama also stressed the importance of cooperation “in science and technology” to fuel growth and entrepreneurship. Yudhoyono called for enhanced cooperation on global environmental challenges.

Obama vowed to double education partnerships in the next five years, and to support Indonesia’s lead in tackling climate change.

He also praised Indonesia’s successful transition from a dictatorship to a democracy, and the work of civil society groups in fighting corruption and promoting human rights.

Obama also noted the existing partnership between Washington and Jakarta to combat terrorism and maritime piracy.

And as the visit comes in the wake of twin natural disasters that have rocked the country, Obama said he hoped his presence showed that “in good times and bad times the United States stands as a friend to Indonesia.”

The visit is also widely seen as a further attempt by Obama to reach out to the Islamic world.

“We don’t expect that we are going to completely eliminate some of the misunderstandings, mistrust developed over a long period of time, but we do think that we’re on the right path,” he said.

He reserved his harshest words for Israeli settlements in the West Bank, saying Israel’s decision to approve 1,000 new housing units in East Jerusalem sent the wrong signal.

“This kind of activity is never helpful when it comes to peace negotiations, and I’m concerned that we’re not seeing each side make the extra effort involved to get a breakthrough,” Obama said.

“Each of these incremental steps end up breaking trust.”

Obama is scheduled to make a major speech at University of Indonesia this morning, which is expected to help build warmer relations with the Muslim world.

There have been reports that Mount Merapi’s eruptions could cause him to leave before his scheduled afternoon departure for the G-20 summit in Seoul. thejakartaglobe.com

MERAPI VOLCANO ASH JAKARTA UPDATE NEWS Airlines stop Jakarta flights after volcano blast

MERAPI VOLCANO ASH AFTER ERUPTIONS 2010 -Merapi Volcano Ash Jakarta (Indonesia) Update News Airlines Stop Jakarta Flights After Volcano Blast. MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – International airlines canceled flights into Indonesia's capital Saturday after a volcano hundreds of miles (kilometers) to the east unleashed its most powerful eruption in a century, incinerating villagers as they fled a searing gas cloud. Previous news: Current Update Merapi Volcano Disaster Indonesia Yogyakarta On Highest Merapi Alert.

The number of people killed by Mount Merapi in the last two weeks climbed to 138, as a tiny hospital at the foot of the mountain struggled to cope with survivors, some with burns on up to 95 percent of their bodies.

The only sign of life in one man, whose eyes were milky gray in color and never blinked, was the shallow rising and falling of his chest. Others, their lungs choked with abrasive volcanic ash, struggled to breathe.

Indonesia's most volatile mountain unleashed a surge of searing gas, rocks and debris Friday that raced down its slopes at highway speeds, mowing down the slope-side village of Bronggang and leaving a trail of charred corpses in its path.

It continued to rumble and groan Saturday, at times spitting ash up to five miles (eight kilometers) in the air, dusting windshields, rooftops and leaves on trees hundreds of miles (kilometers) to the west.

Just days before President Barack Obama's visit to Indonesia, international carriers canceled flights to the capital, Jakarta, over concerns about the volcano, 280 miles (450 kilometers) away.

"The volcanic ash presence in the airways surrounding Jakarta could cause severe damage to our aircraft and engines which could impair the safety of our operations including passengers and crew," said Azharuddin Osman, director of operations for Malaysia Airlines.

Among the other carriers temporarily suspending flights were Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. Domestic flights were unaffected, except for those going to Yogyakarta, the city closest to the volcano whose airport closed Friday.

The eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul volcano in April forced the closure of most European airports for a week and led to the cancellation of over 100,000 flights.

But Tia Wanti, an information officer at Jakarta's international airport, implied the move to stop international flights to Jakarta was premature, saying the dust wasn't causing problems either in the skies above the airport or on its runways. The airport handles about 1,200 flights a day, and the airline decisions caused about 10 percent of those to be canceled.

The Indonesian government, meanwhile, has expanded a "danger zone" to a ring 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the peak, bringing it to the edge of Yogyakarta, which has been put on its highest alert.

The biggest threat is the Code River, which flows into the city of 400,000 from the 9,700-foot (3,000-meter) mountain and could act as a conduit for deadly volcanic mudflows that form in heavy rains.

Racing at speeds of 60 mph (100 kph), the molten lava, rocks and other debris, can destroy everything in their path. People living near the river's banks have been advised to stay away.

Sigit Priohutomo, a senior hospital official, said the mountain has killed 138 in the last two weeks.

At least 94 of those died Friday, Merapi's deadliest day in decades. More than 200 others were injured with burns, respiratory problems, broken bones and cuts, leaving the tiny hospital of Sardjito overwhelmed.

It has the only burn unit in town — with just nine beds. And with nearby airports closed because of poor visibility, extra ventilators intended for burn victims could not be flown in, said Dr. Ishandono Dahlan. In the meantime, nursing students were pumping emergency respirators by hand.

The small unit is forced to turn away all but the most severe cases, officials said. Those with severe smoke inhalation — which scorches and inflames lung tissue, making breathing difficult if not impossible — get top priority, since the only ventilators in the hospital are in the unit. Next, the severity and extent of burns are considered.

Dahlan, who is a plastic surgeon, said he has eight ventilators — not even one for every bed in the unit — and needs at least four more. It was unclear when he would get them.

Even patients with more mild cases of smoke inhalation who weren't on the special ward needed access to the machines, he said.

"If they're not on a ventilator, they're inhaling more ash," said Dahlan.

The unit is supposed to be the most sterile in the hospital since burns are essentially open wounds and prone to infection. While a pass code restricts entry, Dahlan said it's a struggle to keep the unit hermetic.

The air conditioning frequently breaks, so someone opens a window. The entryway has double doors, but the interior set are often left open, meaning the whole unit is exposed whenever anyone enters. Visitors are asked to come in one at a time, and to don cotton gowns and masks, but the rules are easily broken and the gowns have begun to feel grimy.

Still, conditions on the unit are far better than in the rest of the hospital. Many wards are not sealed off at all, with only a swinging door to the outside. Families crowd the hallways, sleeping on mats, and a sprinkling of dust covers everything, from the stretchers to the doctors' white coats.

Conditions were also deteriorating at emergency shelters in the shadow of the volcano that were crammed with more than 200,000 people evacuated from the mountain.

With muddy floors, flies landing on the faces of sleeping refugees, many complained of poor sanitation, saying there were not enough toilets or clean drinking water. They also worried about what was yet to come.

"It's scary. ... The eruption just keeps going on," said Wajiman, 58, who was sitting in a shelter near a girl reading a newspaper headlined "Merapi isn't finished yet."

Merapi's latest round of eruptions began Oct. 26, followed by more than a dozen other powerful blasts and thousands of tremors.

With each new eruption, scientists and officials have steadily pushed the villagers who live along Merapi's slopes farther from the crater.

The latest eruption released 1,765 million cubic feet (50 million cubic meters) of volcanic material, making it "the biggest in at least a century" at Merapi, state volcanologist Gede Swantika said as plumes of smoke continued to shoot up more than 30,000 feet (10,000 meters).

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 235 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanoes because it sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped string of faults that lines the Pacific Ocean.

UPDATE MERAPI VOLCANO DISASTER NEWS Indonesia Yogyakarta on Highest Merapi Alert

INDONESIA MERAPI ERUPTS VOLCANO PHOTO - Update Merapi Volcano Disaster Current News Indonesia Yogyakarta On Highest Merapi Alert. With Central Java’s Mount Merapi experiencing its worst eruptions in more than a century, the Indonesian president and his three top ministers on Friday arrived in Yogyakarta to reassure  residents and ensure a quicker response to the unfolding disaster. Read: Merapi Volcano Updates Indonesia Issues Flight Warning As Volcano Spews Ash.

The volcano, which has been continually erupting since Oct. 26, sent deadly heat clouds down its slopes on Thursday night and Friday morning, killing 64 people and destroying villages previously thought to be safe.

The deaths brought the toll to 122, with more than 150,000 people displaced, presidential staffer Andi Arief said.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived in Yogyakarta on Friday night and had set up his command post at Gedung Agung, the presidential residence there. The city of 400,000 people is 30 kilometers south of the volcano.

Yogyakarta Mayor Herry Zudianto late on Thursday declared that the city was at the highest alert level.

The authorities also widened the radius of the danger zone around the mountain for the second time in a week, from 15 km to the present 20 km.

It was at 10 km immediately after the eruption cycle began.

Lahar, or cold lava washed down by heavy rains, on Friday afternoon begun to flow through the Code River that runs down the southern slope of Merapi and through the heart of Yogyakarta, causing panic among those living on its banks.

“Since Friday at dawn, residents in seven subdistricts have been told to be ready to be evacuated at any time,” Zudianto said.

Yogyakarta’s international airport was closed as ash clouds billowed from the 2,914-meter peak to the altitude of cruising jetliners and the runway was covered in grey soot. Officials said the airport remain shut until at least Saturday.

Forty-one flights between Jakarta and Yogyakarta were canceled on Friday.

Yudhoyono, who was accompanied by State Secretary Sudi Silalahi and all three coordinating ministers, did not say how long he planned to stay in Yogyakarta.

“I have to be with the people there to assure them, as well as for quick decision-making,” he said. “In a crisis situation like this, I don’t want decision-making to take long.”

Journalists who cover the palace have been told to prepare to stay in Yogyakarta until Sunday at the earliest, but the president was scheduled to be back in Jakarta to greet visiting US President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

The president also said that coordination of disaster mitigation for the eruption had been tasked to Syamsul Maarif, the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

“Looking at the scale and the continuity of the disaster, I decided that the command is now in the hand of the BNPB head with the help of the Yogyakarta and Central Java governors, the Diponegoro military commander and the heads of the police of Central Java and Yogyakarta,” he said, adding that the decision was effective as of Friday.

Yudhoyono said he had also assigned Agung Laksono, coordinating minister for people’s welfare, to coordinate aid from the central government.

Meanwhile, the military is preparing a brigade to build makeshift hospitals and public kitchens to serve the growing number of displaced.

“The Indonesian Armed Forces [TNI] will also mobilize vehicles for [evacuations],” Yudhoyono said.

He added that the National Police were also preparing a task force to assure a smooth flow of traffic as people moved to safety.

Sukhyar, head of the geological agency, said officers at observation stations had been withdrawn for safety reasons.

The Transportation Ministry has ordered pilots to stay at least 12 km away from the rumbling volcano, and several flights linking Central Java to Singapore and Malaysia have been canceled this week. thejakartaglobe.com

AEROCARIBBEAN FLIGHT 883 CRASHED Cuban Airliner Crashes with 68 People On Board

PHOTO Cuban Airliner Crashes 2010 AeroCaribbean Flight 883 Crashed News - Cuban Airliner Crashes with 68 People On Board. A Cuban airliner flying from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba to the capital crashed in a mountainous area after declaring an emergency Thursday evening with 68 people aboard, including 28 foreigners, state media reported. There was no immediate word on whether any survived. Other disaster news: Merapi Volcano Updates Indonesia Issues Flight Warning As Volcano Spews Ash.

AeroCaribbean Flight 883 went down near the village of Guasimal in Santi Spiritus province, carrying 61 passengers and a crew of seven, state television said. It said 28 passengers were foreigners, but did not give a breakdown of nationalities.

State media said the names of those on board would be released later. Rescue workers were at the scene and had recovered the first bodies, according to the local state-run newspaper Escambray. It said they were also searching the rugged area for survivors.

A photo posted on the paper's Web site showed a large piece of the plane in flames, with rescue workers in olive-green military uniforms standing around it. It said the local Communist Party chief as well as Interior Ministry and other officials were at the scene helping with the rescue effort.

The twice-a-week flight goes from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to Santiago de Cuba to Havana. It had been due to land in the Cuban capital at 7:50 p.m, but reported an emergency at 5:42 p.m. and subsequently lost contact with air traffic controllers.

State media said that the plane was an ATR-72 twin turboprop and that the crash site was not far from the Zaza reservoir, the largest in Cuba. It said authorities had mobilized doctors and emergency workers in the rural area, which is about 220 miles (350 kilometers) east of Havana.

At Havana's national terminal, relatives of those on board the plane were kept isolated from other passengers and journalists.

"This is very sad," said Caridad de las Mercedes Gonzalez, who was manning an airport information desk. "We are very worried. This has taken us by surprise."

State media gave no details on what happened to the airliner, saying only that the cause of the crash was being investigated. The flight would have been one of the last leaving Santiago de Cuba for Havana ahead of Tropical Storm Tomas, which was on a track to pass between Cuba's eastern end and the western coast of Haiti on Friday. Cuban media said earlier that flights and train service to Santiago were being suspended until the storm passed.

AeroCaribbean is owned by Cuban state airline Cubana de Aviacion. The last passenger plane crash on the island occurred in March 2002, when a Soviet-made biplane carrying 16 people — including 12 foreigners — plunged into a small reservoir in central Cuba. The plane was operated by a small local charter company called Aerotaxi.

MERAPI VOLCANO HIGH EXPLOSION 2010 MBAH PETRUK - Merapi Volcano Updates Indonesia Issues Flight Warning As Volcano Spews Ash. Indonesia on Tuesday warned airlines to avoid certain routes over central Java as the Mount Merapi volcano belched more heat clouds of gas and ash, while six international flights were canceled. Read previous news Merapi Erupts Again Today - Indonesian Volcano Spews Heat Clouds Ash.

Transport ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said an official warning was issued telling all airlines to “use an alternative route for safety reasons due to the volcanic ash.“

Malaysia-based AirAsia Bhd. (5099.KU) said it had canceled four flights linking Kuala Lumpur to Yogyakarta and nearby Solo on Tuesday, while Silk Air canceled two flights between Singapore and Solo.

“The flights...to Yogya and Solo have been canceled only for Nov. 2. We will update if there are any further developments,“ an AirAsia spokeswoman said, referring to four flights to and from the cities.

A statement from SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines Ltd. (SINGY), said a flight from Singapore to Solo and its return leg were canceled. “Our next scheduled Singapore-Solo flight is on Thursday and we are closely monitoring the situation,“ the statement said.

Almost 40 people have been killed since the 2,914-meter Mount Merapi, the most active of the many volcanoes in Indonesia, began erupting last week. It spewed heat clouds high into the air six times after dawn on Tuesday, and volcanologists say such activity is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

“It could go on for weeks, even months,“ volcanologist Subandrio said. Indonesia straddles major tectonic fault lines and is part of a region known as the “Ring of Fire“ that circles the Pacific Ocean.

MERAPI ERUPTS AGAIN TODAY Indonesian Volcano Spews Heat Clouds, Ash This Morning

INDONESIA MERAPI MOUNT VOLCANO PICS - Merapi Erupts Again Today - Indonesian Volcano Spews Heat Clouds, Ash This Morning. Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano spewed heat clouds and ash on Monday as officials warned another eruption is expected, though possibly not as big as one that killed 34 people last week. Searing grey fumes and ash shot high into the sky and rolled down the slopes of the 2,914-metre (9,616-foot) mountain, Indonesia’s most active volcano, spreading fear and panic among nearby residents in central Java. Another Indonesia News Update Eruption of Indonesia's Merapi Biggest Yet.

Merapi, a sacred landmark in Javanese culture whose name translates as “Mountain of Fire”, has convulsed regularly since last Tuesday’s major eruptions, driving up to 50,000 people into temporary shelters. “There’ll be more eruptions as not all the energy has been released.

Eruptions will continue to take place in the weeks ahead,” volcanologist Surono said. He said there was no current need to expand a 10-kilometre (six-mile) exclusion zone around the mountain, but warned those in cramped shelters it was still too unsafe to go back to their homes.

INDONESIA TSUNAMI DISASTER MENTAWAI Storms Crippling Tsunami Aid To Indonesia Islands Mentawai

Indonesia Tsunami Mentawai Disaster: Storms Crippling Tsunami Aid To Indonesian Islands Mentawai. A group of private aid workers battled fierce swells and driving rain that kept most craft on shore Friday, managing to deliver food and other supplies to desperate survivors on the islands hardest hit by a giant tsunami Mentawai that killed more than 400 people. Government agencies pulled back boats and helicopters that had been ferrying aid to the most distant corners of the Mentawai islands and instead resorted to air-dropping boxes of aid from planes.

On a borrowed 75-foot (24-meter) cruiser, aid workers faced rough seas and sheets of rain - plus miserable seasickness - to bring noodles, sardines and sleeping mats to villages that have not received any help since Monday's earthquake. In one village, most people were still huddling in a church in the hills, too afraid to come down even to get the aid.

Dozens of injured survivors of the tsunami, meanwhile, languished at an overwhelmed hospital Friday. They lay on mats or the bare floor as rainwater dripped onto them from holes in the ceiling and intravenous tubes hung from plastic ropes strung from the rafters.

"We need doctors, specialists," nurse Anputra said at the tiny hospital in Pagai Utara - one of the four main islands in the Mentawai chain slammed by tsunami, which was triggered by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake.

Inside the tiny hospital, a man cradled his screaming son as staff tended to the child's broken arm. The 35-year-old described how his two other young children were ripped from his embrace by the towering wave and sucked out to sea.

Health workers also cared for a newly orphaned 2-month-old boy found in a storm drain. The infant, with cuts on his face, blinked sleepily in a crib. Hospital workers named him Imanual Tegar. Tegar means "tough" in Indonesian.

The toll from the earthquake and the tsunami it spawned rose to 408 on Friday as officials found more bodies, and 303 people were still missing and feared swept out to sea, said Agus Prayitno of the West Sumatra provincial disaster management center.

Officials say 13,000 survivors on the islands are homeless. Many were sorely in need of help, which the government was struggling to deliver.

While tons of aid has reached the islands' main towns, many farther-flung villages are accessible only by foot or sea because roads are too old or damaged for large trucks. Storms, however, have made the waters too dangerous for small boats, West Sumatra Gov. Irwan Prayitno told reporters. Even when seas calm down, another official said the government hasn't been able to gather enough boats to address the scale of the disaster, making do with just a few dozen wooden boats with outboard motors.

Despite the challenges, a group of 50 private aid workers did set out by sea in a 75-foot (24-meter) vessel Friday for villages along the southern coast of South Pagai.

Soo after the wave-breaking boat set out, it became apparent why other vessels had been kept back. Nearly all the 50 relief workers on board were ill from the pounding waves and the deck had to be hosed off at one point to clear vomit.

Still, the mission was able to bring the first help to the village of Limu where dozens of houses were destroyed, some swept off their foundations, and dead chickens littered the shoreline.

Villagers eagerly grabbed the boxes of sardines and noodles and the sleeping mats the workers delivered, though many were too terrified to come down to the beach. There were no deaths in Limu, but one person was injured.

Government teams also delivered food - mostly instant noodles - by dropping it out of Hercules planes. Local television footage showed survivors running to pick up the boxes.

Four days after the tsunami crashed into the Mentawai islands off Sumatra, details of survivors' miery and new accounts of the terrifying moments when the wave struck were still trickling out from the area, which was cut off by rough seas for nearly two days after the tsunami.

A group of surfers told of watching in horror as a roaring wall of water crossed a lagoon and slammed into their three-story thtch-roofed resort. The power of the wave shook the building so hard they feared it would collapse. All 27 people at the resort survived - five of them by clinging to trees.

"It was noise and chaos. You can hear the water coming, coming, coming," Chilean surfer and videographer Sebastian Carvallo said Friay. "And then before the second wave hit the building, everyone was, like, screaming and when the wave hit the building, you could only hear people praying."

Carvallo said at least two of the waves were at least 16 feet (five meters) high. Early reports said there was only one wave 10 feet (three meters) high, but several witnesses have since described one or several taller than that.

Hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the tsunami zone, meanwhile, a volcano on the island of Java that killed 35 people this week erupted five more times Friday, sending searing clouds of ash cascading down its slopes. No more casualties were reported as the number of refugees swelled to 47,000.

The number of dead from the two disasters, which struck within 24 hours of each other, has now reached 443. Officials said two more people died of burns from Tuesday's blast, bringing the volcano's death toll to 35.

At least 47,000 people who live around Mount Merapi are staying in government camps or with friends and relatives, the National Disaster Management Agency said.

The volcano's activity appeared to be easing pressure behind a lava dome that has formed in the crater, said Safari Dwiyono, a scientist who has been monitoring Merapi for 15 years.

"If the energy continues to release little by little like this, it reduces the chances of having a bigger, powerful eruption," he said.

Residents from Kinahrejo, Ngrangkah, and Kaliadem - villages that were devastated in Tuesday's blast - crammed into refugee camps. Officials brought cows, buffalo and goats down the mountain so that villagers wouldn't try to go home to check on their livestock.

INDONESIA NEWS UPDATE: Eruption of Indonesia's Merapi on Saturday Biggest Yet - More Predicted

Indonesia News Update Eruption of Indonesia's Merapi on Saturday Biggest Yet - More Predicted. Geologists have confirmed that Mount Merapi’s eruption early on Saturday morning was its biggest this week, spreading ashfall all the way to Yogyakarta, some 30 kilometers away. Watch Video Merapi Eruption Oct 26, 2010 Middle Java Mountain Yogyakarta Sleman. The other news is Indonesia Mount Merapi Volcano Erupts 26 October 2010.

Sri Sumarti, the Merapi section head at the Volcano Investigation and Technology Development Institution (BPPTK), said the eruption at about 1 a.m. was louder and stronger than the initial one on Tuesday, which left more than 30 people dead.

It lasted for 22 minutes and sent heat clouds flowing down into the Krasak and Boyong Rivers.

"Our officers at the observation stations reported hearing explosive eruptions twice,” she said. “The heat clouds shot 3.5 kilometers into the air, westward toward Magelang, much higher than the 1.5 kilometers on Tuesday," she said.

The eruption caused panic on the ash-covered streets of Sleman district in Yogyakarta, well outside the immediate disaster zone. The situation calmed down by about 3 a.m. Yogyakarta’s Adisucipto Airport was temporarily closed from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.

But Surono, the head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), assured that the deadly superheated clouds would not reach the outer ring of the disaster zone.

No new casualties have been reported, though media reports say some residents from Magelang have been taken to the hospital due to shock.

More eruptions are predicted and geologists warned people to remain alert.

"We predict that Mount Merapi will erupt again because there is still a lot of magma that will push its way up to the crater," said Subandrio, head of the Volcano Investigation and Technology Development Institution (BPPTK).

Surono called on all citizens of Yogyakarta to not panic. "Stay calm and wear a mask. Mount Merapi will cough again. Panicking would only could cause injuries," he told the Globe. thejakartaglobe.com

CHINA SUPER COMPUTER – China Boasts World's Fastest Supercomputer

PHOTO CHINA FASTEST SUPERCOMPUTER - China Super Computer – China Boasts World's Fastest Supercomputer. China is set to trump the US to take the number one spot for the fastest supercomputer ever made in a survey of the world's zippiest machines, it was reported Thursday.

Tianhe-1, meaning Milky Way, has a sustained computing speed of 2,507 trillion calculations per second, making it the fastest computer in China on a list published Thursday. But it is also 1.4 times faster that the world's current fastest ranked supercomputer in the US, housed at a national laboratory in Tennessee, according to the New York Times.

Tianhe-1 does its warp-speed "thinking" at the National Center for Supercomputing in the northern port city of Tianjin -- using mostly chips designed by US companies.

The Tianjin Meteorological Bureau and the National Offshore Oil Corporation data centre have both started trials using the computer.

"It can also serve the animation industry and bio-medical research," Liu Guangming, the supercomputing centre's director, told state news agency Xinhua.

According to Jack Dongarra, a University of Tennessee computer scientist who maintains the official supercomputer rankings which are due to be released next week, the Chinese beast "blows away the existing number one machine".

"We don't close the books until November 1, but I would say it is unlikely we will see a system that is faster," he told the New York Times.

It is not the first time, however, that the US has had its digital crown stolen by an Asian upstart. In 2002, Japan made a machine with more power than the top 20 American computers put together.

Japan is also working on a new machine called "K Computer" in a bid to take the supercomputing crown.

Computer designer Steven J. Wallach is not overly worried by China's rise to computing superpower.

"It's interesting, but it's like getting to the four-minute mile," he told the New York Times. "The world didn't stop. This is just a snapshot in time.

"They want to show they are number one in the world, no matter what it is."

INDONESIA MOUNT MERAPI VOLCANO ERUPTS OCTOBER 2010 Indonesian Volcano Erupts, 20 Hurt by Hot Ash

PHOTO MERAPI VOLCANO ERUPTS INDONESIA MOUNT 2010 - Indonesia Mount Merapi Volcano Erupts 26 October 2010 Indonesian Volcano Erupts, 20 Hurt By Hot Ash. Several people have been injured by hot ash spewed during an eruption of Indonesia’s most volatile volcano. An AP reporter witnessed up to 20 people being taken away for treatment of their injuries.

Subandriyo, chief vulcanologist in the area, said Mount Merapi started to erupt just before dusk Tuesday. It had rumbled and groaned for hours. Scientists have warned that pressure building beneath Merapi’s lava dome could trigger one of the most powerful blasts in years.

Thousands of residents on the slopes have been evacuated. But most who fled were the elderly and children, while adults stayed to tend to homes and farms on the mountain’s fertile slopes.

EARTHQUAKE PADANG SUMBAR INDONESIA 7,2SR Panic Spreads after Powerful Earthquake Jolts Mentawai Islands

GOOGLE MAPS PADANG MENTAWAI SUMBAR EARTHQUAKE 2010 - Earthquake Padang Mentawai Sumbar 7,2SR Indonesia Panic Spreads After Powerful Earthquake Jolts Mentawai Islands. There are reports of a tsunami triggered by an earthquake off Indonesia’s Sumatra island 7,2 SR. Australian Rick Hallett has told the Nine Network he was on his charter boat with guests when a two-to three-metre wall of water rolled into their bay in the Mentawai Islands.

He said it picked up one boat and swept it towards theirs, which exploded. They threw anything that floated into the water including, surfboards and fenders, and jumped in.

Mr Hallett said several people were carried 200 metres inland, while others scrambled up trees, and amazingly no-one was killed. A powerful earthquake hit off western Indonesia late yesterday, briefly triggering a tsunami warning that sent thousands of panicked residents fleeing to high ground. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The 7.7-magnitude temblor struck at a depth of 20 kilometres off Sumatra island, said the US Geological Survey. At least five towns in the provinces of Bengkulu and West Sumatra were badly jolted, officials and witnesses said, as were the nearby Mentawai islands.

"Everyone was running out of their houses," said Sofyan Alawi, a resident in the city of Padang, adding that, with loudspeakers from mosques blaring out tsunami warnings, the roads leading to surrounding hills were quickly jammed with cars and motorcycles.

"We kept looking back to see if a wave was coming," said 28-year-old resident Ade Syahputra.

Areas closest to the epicenter of the quake were sparsely populated, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, said Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official. A 5.0-magnitude aftershock hit less than an hour after the original quake, and the region remained on alert for more.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. The city of Padang was badly shaken one year ago by a 7.6-magnitude quake that killed at least 700 people and flattened or severely damaged 180,000 buildings.

That followed the 2004 tsunami off Sumatra's westernmost province of Aceh that was triggered by a 9.1-magnitude quake and killed 230,000 in a dozen countries, roughly half in Indonesia.

INDOMIE RECALLED FROM TAIWAN: What's Really Wrong with Indonesian Noodles?

PHOTO Indomie instant noodles Burned - Indomie Recalled From Taiwan. What's Really Wrong With Indonesian Noodles? While it is being recalled from Taiwan’s supermarkets and food stores for allegedly containing methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and benzoic acid, Indonesian "Indomie" instant noodles remain on sale at home as the country’s Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has stated the fast food is still safe for consumption.

"A product evaluation has been conducted before being sold to the public, the nipagin content in the noodle’s soy sauce is still within the acceptable range ," BPOM head Kustantinah said. The soy sauce only contains 250 milligrams per kilogram of preservatives, which was still normal for consumption.

According to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) and risk study on additives, international terms had been used in the Indonesian Health Minister Regulation no 722 of 1988. "In noodle soy sauce, the maximum nipagin is limited to 250 milligrams per kilogram. In other food products besides meat, fish and poultry it reached 1,000 milligrams per kilogram," she said.

Taiwan authorities late last week recalled all Indomie instant noodles from the market because they allegedly contain methyl p-hydroxybenzoate and benzoic acid. The two elements should only be used to make cosmetics.

However, the Indonesian food monitoring agency said the instant noodle was safe consumption. Therefore, Indonesia has asked Taiwan to immediately clarify its allegations that Indonesian "Indomie" instant noodles were not safe for consumption.

Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu that all Indomie instant noodle products for domestic and international markets were safe for consumption.

"With regard to Indomie we hereby again state that it is safe for consumption," she said. She said Indonesia and Taiwan apply different standards with regard to foods , to instant noodles and ketchup in particular. "The two standards are both internationally accepted. It means Indomie products which are marketed in Taiwan are also safe for consumption," she said.

Producer of Indomie instant noodle, publicly-listed food giant PT Indofood Sukses Makmur (ICBP) said its products exported to Taiwan always meet local food safety standards. ICBP Director Taufik Wiraatmadja said the company believed the reports carried in Taiwanese media did not concern its instant noodles intended for the Taiwanese market.

ICBP has been exporting instant noodles to various countries for more than 20 years. The company always tried to ensure that its instant noodles complied with food safety requirements set by the countries where they were marketed. "ICBP should like to emphasize that its products are wholly compliant with globally-accepted guidelines set by the CODEX Alimentarius Commission, the international food standards body," he said.

According to Minister Mari Pangestu, Indomie products withdrawn by the Taiwanese food control authorities were found to be not the ones marketed in that country. "Indeed they had confiscated some Indomie products but they were actually not the ones intended for marketing in that country. So that is what really happened," she said.

In connection with it she said she had communicated with the Taiwanese food and drug control authorities and had asked for their clarification on the matter. "What we wish to avoid is a perception that Indomie products are not safe for consumption while in fact it they are. So we want a clarification, the Taiwanese food and drug control agency should give clarification on the matter," she said.

In the meantime, the deputy head of the Taiwan Trade Office in Jakarta (TETO), Chen Win-Ping, has denied that "dirty competition" was behind Taiwanese authorities’ action in recalling Indonesian-made instant noodles. "It is not true," Chen said. He said personnel from Taiwan’s Health Ministry had found out in May that Indomie contained an excessive amount of preservatives. The finding was also reported to Indonesia’s Industry Ministry.

Chen added related authorities had also contacted PT Indofood to reduce the content of Methyl P-Hydroxybenzoate in their product to the level meeting Taiwan’s national standards. "However, after an examination of Indomie products sold in several stores in Taiwan last week, we still found the products to be containing an excessive amount of Methyl P-Hydroxybenzoate. Therefore, we asked all supermarkets and stores in Taiwan to remove Indomie from their shelves," he said.

However, in Indonesia, the Health Ministry still sees no need to warn Indomie instant noodle consumers in Indonesia after Taiwanese authorities recalled the product from the market on a large scale. Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih said the ministry was studying whether the Indomie instant noodles marketed in Taiwan were the same as those circulating in Indonesia.

"We have not issued any call because we do not yet understand whether the same Indomie instant noodles are also sold to us. This needs to be investigated," she said.

The minister said she had ordered the BPOM to conduct the investigation after learning that Taiwanese authorities had banned Indomie instant noodles from circulating in their market. In this regard, the BPOM is reviewing the quality of instant noodles circulating in the domestic market.

"Today we also have instructed all of our branches across Indonesia to take repeat samples of instant noodles of all brands," BPOM Chief Kustantinah told a press conference at the BPOM building.

BPOM would take repeat samples outside periodic samples to see the quality of the instant noodles, she said.

"We will examine the samples all at once and not one by one to make the examination more efficient and cheaper," she said.
